Your DNV Was Approved as Self-Employed: Register as an Autónomo Without Delay

Your Spain Digital Nomad Visa approval is an exciting milestone, but it is not the end of the process. If your application was approved on the basis that you are self-employed, a freelancer or an independent contractor, one of your most important next steps is to register correctly as an autónomo in Spain.

Do not leave this until renewal. Recent renewal cases reported by immigration professionals show that UGE may check whether self-employed permit holders fulfilled the Social Security commitment made in their original application. A long unexplained delay can create extra costs, extra paperwork and a risk to the renewal.

The practical rule: begin the registration process as soon as reasonably possible after approval. If a bank, TIE appointment or another administrative step delays you, keep dated evidence showing what happened and what you did to resolve it.

Why autónomo registration matters after DNV approval

A self-employed DNV holder normally needs two separate registrations:

  • Agencia Tributaria: registration for tax purposes using the appropriate activity details.
  • Spanish Social Security: registration in the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers, known as RETA.

These registrations create the official record that you are carrying out the activity described in your DNV application. They also allow you to invoice correctly, pay the applicable Social Security contribution and submit the tax returns that may later support your renewal.

There is no single published UGE deadline stating that every applicant must complete RETA registration the day after approval. However, recent cases suggest that UGE may expect the registration to closely follow the approval date. The safest approach is therefore to start immediately rather than assuming that several months will be accepted automatically.

Open a Spanish bank account early

Opening a Spanish bank account should also be near the top of your list. It can be needed to set up direct debits for Social Security contributions and makes it easier to manage taxes, professional expenses and everyday payments in Spain.

Bank requirements vary. A bank may ask for your passport, NIE, approval resolution, proof of address, proof of professional activity and, in some cases, your TIE. If one bank will not open the account before your TIE is issued, ask another bank what alternatives it accepts and keep proof of your attempts. A bank delay does not remove your registration responsibilities, so speak to a gestor promptly about a workable route.

Post-approval checklist for self-employed applicants

  1. Read your approval resolution. Confirm the conditions attached to your permit and the activity on which it was approved.
  2. Book your TIE appointment. Follow our step-by-step TIE guide and keep the appointment confirmation.
  3. Open a Spanish bank account. Start early, particularly if your Social Security payment will be collected by direct debit.
  4. Choose a gestor or tax adviser. Make sure they understand both autónomo registration and Digital Nomad Visa renewal evidence.
  5. Register for tax and Social Security. Coordinate the effective dates carefully so both registrations reflect your real start of activity.
  6. Issue compliant invoices and keep records. Save contracts, invoices, bank receipts, tax filings and proof of Social Security payments.
  7. Plan for tax. Use our Spain Tax Calculator for an initial estimate, then have a qualified adviser confirm your personal position.

What if you cannot register immediately?

Some applicants experience genuine delays because they are waiting for a TIE, cannot yet open a bank account, struggle to obtain an appointment or receive conflicting advice. Do not simply wait in silence.

  • Keep screenshots, emails, appointment confirmations and bank correspondence.
  • Ask a qualified professional whether another registration route is available.
  • Record the date you started working from Spain and the reason for any later registration date.
  • Do not attempt to backdate a registration without professional advice; it can lead to retroactive contributions, surcharges and amended tax filings.

If you have already delayed, get advice before renewal. The correct solution depends on your dates, work history, tax residence and the documents filed with your original application.

How RENN can register you as an autónomo

If coordinating Social Security, Agencia Tributaria and a digital certificate sounds daunting, our partner RENN can handle the entire registration online. It takes about 10 minutes of your time, and registration is usually complete within 1 to 3 days.

  1. Fill in your details. Your address, ID, IBAN and phone number. RENN accepts the paper NIE document, so you do not need to wait for the TIE card.
  2. RENN registers everything. Social Security, the Tax Agency and your digital certificate. If you already have a NAF (Social Security affiliation number), registration can take just one day.
  3. Start operating. Send invoices, track expenses and file your taxes through RENN's platform, with real accountants reviewing your filings and typically replying in under an hour when you need help.
Waiting for your TIE? Because RENN's registration works with the paper NIE document, a pending TIE appointment does not have to hold up your autónomo registration. Still keep the dated evidence recommended above in case UGE asks about your timeline.

Build your renewal file from day one

Keep a digital folder containing your approval, TIE, foreign client contracts, invoices, bank statements showing payments, tax registrations and returns, Social Security registration and contribution receipts. UGE may ask for evidence that you continued to meet the conditions of the permit, including your professional activity and financial means.

Review the original DNV requirements alongside your approval conditions. Your circumstances can change, but your records should make the history easy to understand.

Act early and keep evidence

For a self-employed DNV holder, autónomo registration is not a task to postpone until the card is close to expiring. Start the process as soon as possible, open a Spanish bank account, keep every filing and payment, and obtain individual tax advice where needed.

This article provides general information, not legal or tax advice. Procedures and case handling can change, and the correct registration date depends on your circumstances. If you need help reviewing the post-approval steps or preparing for renewal, book a consultation with Spain Move HQ.
