Spain Digital Nomad Visa Renewal: Autónomo Registration, Tax Records and Timing

Renewing Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa is not simply a repeat of the first application. UGE can review whether you maintained the conditions that qualified you for the permit throughout its validity.

For self-employed applicants, this makes your autónomo registration, Social Security payments, foreign client contracts, income and tax filings especially important. Recent cases reported by immigration professionals indicate closer scrutiny of gaps between DNV approval and RETA registration.

When can you file your DNV renewal?

The usual renewal window opens 60 days before your authorization expires and remains open for up to 90 days afterward. Filing after expiry can carry additional risks, so preparing early is strongly recommended.

Aim to submit near the start of the 60-day window. If UGE asks for clarification, tax records or a correction to your Social Security history, an early filing gives you more time to respond.

What UGE may review

  • Your passport and current residence authorization.
  • Active contracts with companies or clients outside Spain.
  • Evidence that your income remains sufficient for you and any dependents.
  • Your tax returns for the relevant preceding fiscal years.
  • Your Social Security registration and contribution history.
  • Whether your work still meets the Digital Nomad Visa conditions.

Requirements can change and requests may differ by case. Use the current UGE checklist when preparing your file rather than relying only on what was requested in your original application.

The risk of an autónomo registration gap

If your DNV was approved as self-employed but you registered in RETA months later, UGE may ask you to explain or correct the gap. In some reported cases, applicants have been asked to arrange a registration backdated toward the original approval date.

A backdated registration can mean retroactive Social Security contributions and surcharges. It may also affect access to the reduced new-autónomo contribution. The total is not a fixed penalty: it depends on the period, contribution basis, income and how Social Security handles the correction.

Do not assume that an online estimate of €3,000, €4,000 or €10,000 applies to you. Ask a qualified specialist to calculate the actual exposure from your records. If you have not registered yet, read our guide on what to do after self-employed DNV approval.

Prepare complete tax records

Recent renewal guidance has placed greater emphasis on full tax returns from the fiscal years before renewal. The exact documents depend on whether you were Spanish tax resident, non-resident for part of the period or taxable elsewhere.

Prepare copies of submitted returns and proof of filing, not only a tax-status certificate. Your adviser may also need quarterly returns, annual income-tax returns, invoices, bank records and evidence of Social Security payments to reconcile the figures.

If your income changed during the permit, do not hide the change. Ask how UGE is likely to assess the overall period and whether savings or other evidence can support your position. There is no universal answer for every income dip.

DNV renewal document checklist

  1. Check the expiry date and calculate the opening of the 60-day filing window.
  2. Review the current official UGE checklist.
  3. Confirm that your foreign contracts are valid and accurately describe remote work.
  4. Collect complete tax returns for the required years and proof they were submitted.
  5. Download your Social Security registration and contribution history.
  6. Reconcile invoices, bank receipts, declared income and contracts.
  7. Check the current minimum-income requirement for all family members.
  8. Prepare an explanation and dated evidence for any gap or unusual period.

Our Spain Tax Calculator can provide a starting estimate for income tax and Social Security, but it is not a substitute for returns prepared from your actual facts.

Common renewal mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting until the TIE expires before gathering tax records.
  • Submitting certificates when complete returns are requested.
  • Ignoring a gap in autónomo registration and hoping it will not be checked.
  • Assuming every online penalty figure applies to your case.
  • Using expired contracts or documents that do not show continued remote work.
  • Trying to backdate Social Security without coordinated legal and tax advice.

Get help before the filing window opens

Early preparation gives you time to correct records rather than react to a formal request. Spain Move HQ offers a dedicated residency permit renewal service and can help organize the immigration side of your file.

This article is general information and does not replace legal or tax advice. UGE practice continues to develop, and the correct response to a registration gap or tax-history issue depends on the facts. For a personal review, book a consultation.
